Why does Merchant Center say my Shopify product page is unavailable?

Short answer

Google tried to open the product's landing page and could not. Google says these products stop showing in ads and free listings until it can access the page. On a Shopify store the places to look are the store's access setting, the product's sales channels, a product that was archived or deleted, a handle that changed without a redirect, the robots.txt file and the domain's DNS.

What the issue means

Your product data gives Google a link to each product page. Google visits that link. When it cannot access the page, it reports "Product page unavailable" and notes that shoppers may not be able to reach the page either. Google says it disables these products to avoid a bad user experience, and that they stop showing in ads and free listings until it can access the landing page.

Google has two related issues, "Unavailable desktop landing page" and "Unavailable mobile landing page". They list the same kinds of crawl error and the same consequence. The mobile one means Google could not access the page when crawling with a mobile user agent.

The errors Google lists

  • Page not found (404). The landing page was not found on the server.
  • Too many redirects. Google says the landing page URL should not have more than 2 redirects.
  • Couldn't connect, or an HTTP 5xx response. The server could not process the request when Google tried. Google's advice is to make sure the website is always available.
  • Can't access your robots.txt file. Google could not reach the store's robots.txt file, so it could not check the product page.
  • Hostname not resolvable. Google says to make sure your DNS configuration is set up properly.
  • URL protocol. The link must start with http:// or https://.

Google adds that the errors should disappear within a couple of days once the cause is fixed.

Where to look on Shopify

  1. Open the link Merchant Center holds for the product. Use a browser where you are not logged in to your store, so you see what a visitor sees.
  2. Check that the store is public. Shopify says that in private mode all of the store's pages are hidden from visitors and search engines, and that a store can't be in private mode if it uses the Google & YouTube channel. The access setting is on the Online Store page of your Shopify admin.
  3. Check the product's sales channels. Shopify's fix for an "Unavailable landing page" error is to open the product and, in the Sales channels section, confirm it is available to both Online Store and Google & YouTube. If either is unchecked, check it and save.
  4. Check the product itself. Shopify describes archiving as the way to stop displaying a product in your online store without deleting it, and a deleted product is permanently removed. If the flagged product was archived, unarchive it if you still sell it.
  5. Check whether the handle changed. Shopify generates a URL and handle for each new product and lets you edit the handle. When you change a URL, Shopify says you can create a URL redirect so customers can still find what they are looking for. In the admin go to Content > Menus, click View URL Redirects, then Create URL redirect.
  6. Count the redirects. If the link passes through a chain of redirects before it reaches the product, shorten the chain. Google's limit is 2.
  7. For a hostname error, check the DNS records of your domain where the domain is managed.
  8. For a robots.txt error, open your store's address followed by /robots.txt in a browser. Shopify says every store has a default robots.txt file. It calls editing the robots.txt.liquid template an unsupported customization and warns that incorrect use can result in loss of all traffic. If the template was edited, Shopify says deleting the custom file brings back the default.

Getting it checked again

Fix the cause on the store first. Then in Merchant Center open Products and go to the Needs attention tab. Google says you can ask for a website check to speed up the review and reapproval. The review can take up to 12 hours, and you cannot send another request during that time.
