What happens on Google and Meta when a Shopify product has no description?

Short answer

Google requires a description for every product. A product without one gets a warning and may be shown less. Meta lists description as a required field and may not accept a product that lacks it. The fix is the product's Description field in Shopify: a few plain sentences about the product itself.

What Google says

Google lists description as required for each product. Its help page says a product with no description will receive a warning and may experience limited performance. That is not a disapproval. A description that breaks Google's rules for what it may contain is different: Google says that can lead to disapproval.

What Meta says

Meta lists description as a required field for catalog items. Its documentation says that when a required field is missing, products may not upload to the catalog.

What a description should contain

  • Only the product itself. No links to your store, no details about other products or accessories.
  • The most important details in the first 160 to 500 characters.
  • The product's most relevant features and visual attributes.
  • No promotional text such as price, sale dates or shipping, and no text in all capitals.
  • At most 5,000 characters.

How to fix it on Shopify

  1. Open the product in the Shopify admin and write in the Description box.
  2. For many products, use Products → Export (CSV), fill the Body (HTML) column and import the file back with "Overwrite products with matching handles" ticked.
  3. The Google & YouTube channel sends the change on its next sync.

Questions

How long should a description be?

Up to 5,000 characters. Google asks for the most important details in the first 160 to 500.

Does it have to match my product page?

Yes. Google asks that the description be accurate and match the one on your landing page.
