Do I need to set a product category in Shopify for Google Shopping?

Short answer

You don't have to. Google lists product category as optional and assigns one to every product automatically. Setting it yourself means Google does not have to guess. It matters most for products in categories that carry extra requirements, such as apparel. In Shopify, a product saved without a category is stored as Uncategorized.

What Google does without one

Google says all products are automatically assigned a category from its product taxonomy. It works the category out from the title, description, price, brand and GTIN.

When it matters

Some categories bring their own rules. Google names Apparel & Accessories, Mobile Phones and Software as categories with additional required attributes. Alcoholic beverages and gift cards have to be in specific categories. A product that lands in the wrong category can be held to rules that do not fit it.

Where Shopify keeps it

The Category section is on the product page. Shopify suggests a category from the product's name, description and images. If none is assigned, the product is saved as Uncategorized. Shopify says the same can happen to products created by CSV or by an app.

How to fix it on Shopify

  1. Open the product and go to the Category section.
  2. Accept Shopify's suggestion if it is right, or search for a better one. Google's advice is to use the most specific category that describes the product's main function.
  3. For many products, select them in the product list and use Bulk edit to set the category.

Questions

Is Uncategorized the same as no category?

For Google, yes. It says nothing about what the product is, so Google assigns a category on its own.

Does product type do the same job?

No. Product type is your own label. Google says to use it when none of its categories fits the product.
